Thailand

The Kingdom of Thailand is one of the largest countries in South East Asia.  Thailand has a rich culture and heritage, and the beautiful kingdom boasts of irrepressible natural charm, co-existing with old-world architecture of the ancient temples.  The tropical climate is hot and humid, and temperatures can vary between the cooler mountainous north and tropical south.  Friendly, hospitable locals and palette pleasing cuisine only add to its many fascinations.  Thailand accounts for the highest number of tourists in South East Asia, and it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Medical Tourism Thailand

Thailand is also home to state-of-art medical clinics, world-class hospitals and exceptionally skilled surgeons and doctors.  Bangkok Hospital Medical Center, Bumrungrad International, and Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital are all JCI accredited. Bumrungrad received over 400,000 medical tourists alone last year.  Some of the best hospitals are located in two of the major cities in Thailand, namely Bangkok and Phuket.

A majority of medical practitioners in Thailand have received some form of formal training in countries like the United States or Europe.  The King’s father, Prince Mahidol, received his Medical Degree in the early 20th century from the Harvard Medical School in the U.S. Consequently, many of the doctors and associated medical staff are fluent in English. Many hospitals also go out of their way to employ translators for the convenience of non-English speaking staff.  Most large hospitals also have Arabic translators for the many Middle Eastern patients who travel to Thailand for procedures.  Bangkok Hospital has a separate Japanese wing for Japanese medical tourists.  Phyathai Hospitals has translators for more than 22 different languages.

The comfortable exchange rates of the Thai Baht, since its fall in 1997, have also been a contributing factor to the low cost of medical treatment in Thailand.  Another factor driving the prices of procedures down is the competition between the 400 plus private hospitals in the country.  Some treatments cost about one eighth or even less, compared to western countries.  This, in turn, has also fueled the medical tourism industry in Thailand.

US based Rockefeller Foundation was so impressed by the growth of the industry, that they funded many modern healthcare facilities in Thailand.  Prince Mahidol also convinced the Rockefeller Foundation to give out scholarships to Thai citizens to study medicine and nursing.  The Prince and another member of the Royal Family paid for an American Medical Education for a group of Thai men and women.  In order to raise more money for state of the art facilities and equipment, many Thai Hospitals and facilities have raised money by listing themselves on The Stock Exchange of Thailand.  Most hospitals in Thailand use the most advanced medical equipment and procedures.  Looking at the efficient operations of these medical facilities, many of them have also been accredited with the United States ISO standardization.  This has only added to the popularity of medical care in Thailand.

The country has doctors that can treat almost any medical condition ranging from complex heart surgery or cosmetic surgeries to Lasik eye surgery.  The beautiful natural surroundings are home to world renowned medical spas as well. Combined with medical treatments, these have made Thailand an attractive option for post-operative care and recovery.  Thousands of foreign patients have already taken advantage of the highly acclaimed medical treatments in Thailand due to the low cost, quality of care, natural beauty, friendliness of locals and world renowned cuisine.
